    EaA filters should be cleaned every year or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. Carefully remove the filter from the housing. Clean the housing with a shop towel, being careful not to knock contaminants into the air inlet. Filters can be cleaned by carefully vacuuming the filter media on the dirty side, or by holding the filter with one hand and carefully blowing the filter media at a 45 degree angle on the clean side using low-pressure shop air (15-20 lbs. psi).

    Two-cycle engines remain the workhorses in recreational equipment, including outboard motors, motorcycles, snowmobiles and personal watercraft, as well as in lawn and garden applications like lawn mowers and weed eaters. Design changes over recent years have included direct fuel injection engines, in which fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, and exhaust power valves, which improve combustion efficiency at varying RPM. These design changes have allowed two-cycle engine manufacturers to effectively reduce emissions, improve fuel efficiency and decrease oil consumption. Today's two-cycle motors of all types require specialized oil technology to deliver maximum engine protection, dependable operation and long service life.

    As the leader in two-cycle oil technology, AMSOIL has performed extensive research in developing a new line of revolutionary, specialized oils called the "Fabulous Four."     It is no secret that AMSOIL INC. has led the way in extended drain interval technology for over 35 years. We conceived the concept, coined the phrase and introduced the world's first extended drain motor oil. No one knows more about formulating extended drain oils than AMSOIL.

    Other companies, of course, were reluctant to follow our lead. Why, from their perspective, should they? More oil changes means more oil is sold, which means more money is made. It is not rocket science. Only Mobil, with its introduction of Mobil 1 in the mid- 1970s, ventured into extended drain interval territory. But that didn't last long. Although the oil may have been up to the challenge, I suspect that the beancounters at Mobil were concerned about the bottom line and the company pulled back on its drain interval recommendation. It was all about money.

    While it is true that Mobil, now ExxonMobil, as well as some others, are finally offering a few extended drain lubricants, the 3,000-mile oil drain mindset still dominates the industry. Valvoline, for example, has reinforced that recently with its introduction of  its Valvoline Engine Guarantee program. Essentially, this program guarantees an engine for up to 300,000 miles if Valvoline motor oil is used. Impressive on the surface, but there is a little more to it than that. Valvoline attached some qualifiers. First and foremost, the Valvoline motor oil, along with the oil filter, must be changed every 3,000 miles throughout the duration of the program. Qualified vehicles must be registered prior to reaching 75,000 miles, Valvoline motor oil must be used for at least 18 months prior to registration and no vehicles older than 1990 models qualify. Diesel powered vehicles don't qualify for the program, nor do vehicles used for racing, vehicles over 10,000 pounds or vehicles with modified engines. That's understandable.

    Valvoline has further qualified the program contingent on the type of oil used. To gain the 300,000-mile coverage consumers must use one of Valvoline's full synthetic products. Using a Valvoline synthetic blend carries the coverage to 225,000 miles and a Valvoline conventional oil carries it to 150,000 miles.

    To be sure, Valvoline has done its homework. Very few, if any, claims will ultimately be paid. On the low end, 150,000 miles is virtually no stretch for today's engines. On the high end, very few motorists drive the same vehicle for 300,000 miles, and the guarantee is not transferable. There is no question that the profits are there for Valvoline. Assuming a motorist drives 15,000 miles per year it would take 20 years, driving the same vehicle, to reach 300,000 miles. That's 20 years at five oil changes per year. That's a lot of Valvoline motor oil sold.

    Clearly, the push behind the Valvoline program is profit, and a person can't fault Valvoline for that. We are all in this business to make money. What you can fault Valvoline for, and all others who continue to support 3,000-mile oil change intervals, is their irresponsibility in regard to consumers and the environment. To be sure, way too much money is being wasted on unnecessary oil changes, and way too much used oil is being generated.

    In any case, AMSOIL will continue to do the right thing. We will maintain our effort to provide the absolute best, longest lasting lubricants we possibly can. If that means selling a consumer one oil change per year as opposed to five, so be it. Your customers appreciate the value, and you can be proud of the service you provide.

    This talk of extended drain intervals leads me to one final, related topic. Our research has identified trends that indicate fuel dilution issues in 2007 and newer on-highway Caterpillar C13 and C15 engines. It is apparent that engine design is the cause of the problem. Fuel dilution reduces viscosity and may lead to increased wear. Unfortunately, there are no formulation modifications or methods of filtration that can counter these effects. Consequently, rather than jeopardize our reputation or the vehicles of our customers, AMSOIL has deemed it prudent to adjust our drain interval recommendation in these applications. Once again, with the consumer in mind, it was the right thing to do.

    Untreated Fuel Leads to Poor Engine Performance
    A vehicle demonstrates its best efficiency and engine performance when it is new. As the engine ages, its performance suffers from gasoline fuel-generated deposits that form on the fuel injectors, intake valves and combustion chamber. Additives are required to control deposit formation.

    Today's fuels, however, lack sufficient treatments of either enough additives or high quality additives. Fuel system deposits result in the following:

    - Lost fuel economy
    - Lost power and poor throttle response
    - Failed emission tests
    - Poor drivability - surging, hesitation, stalling, rough idle
    - Engine knocking (pinging) and rap
    - Difficult starts

    Unsurpassed Deposit Clean-up
    Port Fuel Injector Deposits form after the engine has been shut down and there is no gasoline flowing through the injectors. During this "hot soak" period the injectors heat up and the gasoline remaining in the injectors degrades and forms deposits. This can happen very quickly with the use of poor quality gasoline and short trip driving. Because the clearances within the injectors are extremely tight and injectors must deliver precise amounts of "atomized" fuel, even small amounts of deposits can cause injectors to malfunction. Fuel flow is reduced and spray patterns are disrupted, decreasing engine efficiency, power and fuel economy, while increasing exhaust emissions.

    Intake Valve Deposits form on the intake side or back side of the valves. As deposits increase, they restrict airflow and alter airflow patterns in the cylinder. The deposits disrupt the balanced air/fuel ratio by momentarily absorbing and releasing fuel, and they can cause valve sticking by getting in the way of the valve stem and guide. Deposits also restrict proper seating, and the valves may be burned. Intake valve deposits cause lost engine power, increased emissions, poor engine efficiency and potential valve failure.

    Combustion Chamber Deposits form on the top of the pistons and on the cylinder heads. They increase compression and absorb heat during combustion to later release it during the intake cycle. In some engines with tight squish domes, combustion chamber deposits cause the piston to actually hit the cylinder head. This is referred to as combustion chamber deposit interference or "carbon rap." Combustion chamber deposits also flake off as they get large, and these flakes can get trapped between the valves and valve seat, resulting in compression loss, difficult starting and rough idle.

    Higher compression and stored heat cause increased intake fresh charge temperatures and the increased likelihood of pre-ignition "knock" or "pinging" when the fuel spontaneously combusts prior to spark ignition. This increases emissions and may cause engine damage. Many of today's cars have "knock" sensors that adjust spark timing to prevent knock.

    Although audible knock is controlled, power is lost from retarded timing. Higher octane fuels of 4-5 octane numbers can be used to help prevent knock, an effect called "octane requirement increase." As a vehicle ages, more expensive higher octane fuel is needed to keep it operating at peak performance. By cleaning combustion chamber deposits, knock is controlled, power is restored, fuel economy increases and higher octane fuels are less necessary for peak performance.

    Maximum Fuel Economy
    AMSOIL P.i. maximizes fuel efficiency by dissolving and removing fuel system deposits and other contaminants for improved power and overall performance.

    Recommendations
    Treat one full tank of gas up to 20 gallons with one bottle of P.i. For very large gas tanks, partially fill to 40 gallons and treat with two bottles of P.i. Using more than two bottles per treatment is not recommended. Treat gas every 4,000 miles or 100 hours of service. P.i. helps pass emission tests by running one tank of treated fuel through the engine prior to testing. Safe for use with catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, oxygenated gas and 10 percent ethanol blended gas. Not recommended for two-cycle engines.

    Income Options For AMSOIL Dealers

    Personal Use
    - Dealers have the luxury of buying all of the products AMSOIL produces at the wholesale price (Dealer cost). They have access to the highest quality lubricants, filters, automotive products and personal care products available on the market, all at huge savings.

    Personal Sales- Dealers who want extra income can buy the product at the Dealer cost and sell it at retail. Right away, Dealers earn profits from the retail profits and commissions. The amount of income Dealers earn through personal sales is generally in proportion to the amount of time and effort they invest into selling.

    Catalog Sales- One of the simplest ways for Dealers to sell AMSOIL products is by distributing AMSOIL catalogs. Dealers can reach thousands of customers by simply handing out catalogs with their Dealer number listed as "customer number". AMSOIL takes the orders, ships the product, bills the customer and collects the money, while dealers receive the retail profits and sales commissions. Distributing catalogs can be a good way to sponsor new Dealers or Preferred Customers, too. The catalog has a section featuring the AMSOIL business opportunity and the Preferred Customer Membership.

    Retail Accounts- AMSOIL Dealers are able to register retail-on-the-shelf accounts.
